If you have two identical vertical gyros then try swapping them and see if your problem goes away, otherwise you might have to find an instrument shop to check the autopilot output of your VG. If it is the vertical gyro then you might notice oscillations on your pilot’s horizon, or possibly slow erection. So if the feedback loop is bad, then no trim and porpoising occurs. The autopilot then decides how much help to give the servo with offsetting trim. How does the pitch servo effect trim operation you ask? In most systems the pitch servo provides a feedback to the autopilot computer letting it know how much force is being applied to the control surface. YES: We have narrowed it down to the pitch servo, autopilot computer, or vertical gyro. With the autopilot still engaged as described above, gently press against the yoke to affect and attitude change and see if the trim wheel moves in the opposite direction. YES: The problem is not the static system, air data computer or the flight director computer. Do you see the same problem as you saw in altitude hold mode? In straight and level flight with everything trimmed out nicely (preferably in smooth air), engage the autopilot without any FD modes engaged. The first thing to look at is the problem in altitude hold mode only, or does it appear in other modes?

I already get a significant workload reduction by having the GPS tracking with the -20, and I don't really want to become completely divorced from flying the plane for long stretches - although it was nice on my most recent flight to engage the AP and look something up on Foreflight. I use mine when I use the AP, but if I had to pay $6500 for it I think I could find a better place to spend the money. Maybe if you had electric trim you could slave it to (which is what the more advanced APs do) it would be worth it. It is able to control the elevator in a very narrow range, but anything out of that range will cause it to give you an alarm to manually adjust the trim. It won't compensate for up or down drafts and doesn't do vertical nav. If you can trim the plane well for straight and level flight the alt.
